Janice Parker’s journey into breast health advocacy began unexpectedly at 41, with a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Nearly twelve years later, she faced a reoccurrence, this time with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Despite a family history, the culture of silence around health in her family meant Janice was initially unprepared for her diagnosis. She chose to educate herself, becoming a trained Susan G. Komen Patient Navigator and Advocacy Ambassador, dedicated to ensuring patients receive necessary care and resources.
Today, as the Community Outreach Manager for Illinois Central College (ICC), Janice advances community awareness and engagement. She plays a pivotal role in developing ICC’s workforce programs through comprehensive community outreach plans that focus on enrolling and retaining students in the Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI) Programs. These programs emphasize the national Earn and Learn approach, aiding particularly African Americans in socio-economically distressed areas.
Janice’s commitment extends beyond her professional role. She has served on various boards and committees, including the Women’s Financial Literacy Board, Susan G. Komen Circle of Promise, and the City of Peoria Fair Employment & Housing Commission, among others. Her efforts in financial literacy, housing, and health advocacy have been featured in numerous publications, showcasing her dedication to fostering community development and addressing healthcare disparities.
