The Living to Serve Foundation was born out of a personal journey of resilience and empowerment. In May 2012, our founder, Ronda Guyton, was diagnosed with breast cancer. After undergoing a double mastectomy in July 2012, Ronda faced the overwhelming stress of survivorship. The anxiety and depression that followed were daunting, but they revealed a critical gap: many women, particularly women of color, were unaware of the resources and services available to support them through their own battles with cancer.
Recognizing the need for better advocacy and access to resources, Ronda founded the Living to Serve Foundation. Her vision was to create a community where women could find the support they need—whether it's through educational programs, access to healthcare resources, or simply knowing they are not alone on their journey.
In November 2021, Ronda was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Having spread to her spine, breast cancer has now become a terminal disease for Ronda. Since the diagnosis, Ronda continues to spread a message of living life to its fullest while sharing her journey with honesty and vulnerability.
Despite advances in breast cancer detection, disparities persist. For example, Black women tend to be diagnosed at a younger age, and they're less likely to receive timely and effective treatments. Ongoing studies aim to reduce these disparities by focusing on tailored screening methods and increasing participation from women of color in research(MedXpress).
As a 40th birthday gift to herself, Ronda Guyton partnered with Carle Health to fund mammograms for 40 women. The Mammo-Van pulled into the parking lot of Landmark Rec Center and the response from women in the community was overwhelming. Despite her efforts to support other women, Ronda soon recognized that she wasn’t adequately caring for her own health when she got the news that her breast cancer had metastasized
To be a beacon of hope for women navigating the complexities of cancer survivorship and health advocacy, particularly for minority women who face additional barriers in their healthcare journeys.
As we celebrate our 10-year milestone, we reflect on the impact we’ve made together. Over the past decade, the Living to Serve Foundation has funded more than 500 mammograms, directly helping women receive life-saving screenings. Our partnership with Carle Health and the has strengthened our ability to provide these essential services and expand our reach within the community. A long standing partnership with Busy Bees from Evangelical United Methodist Church in Washington, IL allow us to provide lovingly made mastectomy shirts for women in need.
